Lancaster City vs Farsley Celtic
By James Thompson

It was a real giant killing at the Giant Axe today as City beat second place Farsley Celtic 2-0.

Celtic had the opportunity to go top of the table with a win today but failed to get past our boys in blue.

City were under pressure in the first 10 minutes of the match with Celtic firing in multiple dangerous crosses into the City box.

After this opening spell of pressure, the blues started to push forward with more passing play.

This pressure was almost rewarded in the 13th minute when Marty Blinkhorn found himself in an excellent goal scoring position but somehow managed to put the ball over the Celtic goal from point blank range.

This fantastic opportunity gave City the belief that they could get a result against Farsley if they kept pushing.

The rest of the first half did not produce a better clear cut chance but both teams were still looking for the opening goal.

It was clear that Celtic’s game plan was to put plenty of crosses into the City box but keeper Jack Sims had them all under control.

With the score goalless at half time, the match intensity grew and grew in the second half.

The travelling team continued to put crosses into the box but never forced Sims to make any difficult saves.

When Celtic tried any other attacking moves, the City defence took control and diffused any dangerous situations.

The deadlock was broken only a few minutes into the second half when Charlie Bailey fired past Celtic goalkeeper Kyle Trenerry from a tight angle to make it 1-0 to City.

In the 66th minute, Matty Blinkhorn made up for his first half miss with a superb headed goal from a deep cross to double the Dollies lead and make it 2-0.

As the clock ticked down, Celtic still tried to find a goal but the City defence were just too good on the day.

It almost went to 3-0 when the Celtic keeper Trenerry lost the ball in the middle of the park but thankfully for him the shot went just wide of the goal.

It was a truly great performance from City which sees the blues shoot up to 14th place in the league table.
