League: Lancaster City 4 - 3 Mossley
By LCFC Media
On an emotional night at Giant Axe, the Dolly Blues paid tribute to Neil Marshall with a superb and thrilling win versus Mossley.
Charlie Waters scored his first goals in a City shirt with a brace alongside another 2 goals for Jacob Gregory as Lancaster came out of a 7 goal thriller with three points on Tuesday night.
In a game that could have ended up in double figures for the hosts as they had chance after chance cleared off the line, Phil Brown's side and the visitors from Greater Manchester provided fantastic entertainment on a night that was all about remembering City legend Neil Marshall.
An emotional tribute was read out before a minutes applause prior to kick off, with nearly 600 spectators paying their respects at Giant Axe, triple our usual midweek winter gate.
Charlie Waters didn't take long to set the pace with a accurate strike from range finding the bottom right corner in the opening minutes. City continued to dominate but couldn't find an elusive second goal until just before half time, with Louis Mayers providing a superb assist. Taking the ball down in a packed penalty area the striker fed the ball to his forward partner Waters to neatly find the top corner with the outside of his boot.
The second half provided a glut of chances for the hosts as Gregory hit the post, whilst Waters was denied by numerous goal line clearances, as was Simon Wills, whilst Westwood, Mercer and Winder all went close as chance after chance fell to City.
Andrew Keogh headed home from a corner for the visitors to give them a lifeline that lasted 60 seconds. Gregory's deflected strike restored City's 2 goal advantage on 52 minutes. The winger got his second 5 minutes later after Waters squared the ball across the box for Gregory to finish from ten yards.
As the fifth goal just wouldn't come for the Dolly Blues, the visitors pulled two back in the final 25 minutes but City held on to claim all three points.
The next game for City is at home to Radcliffe Borough this Saturday, kick off 3pm.
